Intel’s Thunderbolt Interface Coming To Windows PCs in 2012
Intel’s Thunderbolt interface, viewed as an alternative to USB 3.0, is now officially coming to Windows PCs early in 2012 with Acer and Asustek Computer to spearhead the implementation.
The Thunderbolt is a high-speed interconnect technology developed by Intel and Apple that can transfer data between host computers and external devices at up to 10 GB/sec as compared to 5 GB/sec with USB 3.0.
Introduced in February 2011, the technology was initially licensed to Apple and debuted on Macs but Intel said it would make it available to PC makers at a later date.
The adoption of Thunderbolt interface by Acer and Asus could encourage other PC manufacturers to do the same. Hewlett-Packard, the world’s top PC maker, decided to stick to USB 3.0 because of the wide range of peripherals available.
